There Will Be Brawl

There Will Be Brawl, all I can say after seeing this is series is total epic MINDF*(#!! Ok so let’s get this part out of the way, if you haven’t seen or heard of this series go check it out now!

Ok now that’s out of the way I can do a proper review. There Will Be Brawl is a dark comedy/drama based around the Super Smash Bros. franchise with all the associated characters from Nintendo/Sega/Konami. It is a dark time for the mushroom kingdom, crime everywhere and a new killer on the loose who goes after one of the dons in the many crime syndicates which creates chaos throughout the land. We follow the protagonist Luigi through his investigation on his way to find none other than Princess Peach who has been kidnapped once again. Now this story is so epic that I will not go any further since it would involve a ton of spoilers. All I can say is it is one of the best web series I have seen so far.

The acting is amazing especially for such a low budget production. Luigi and Mario are perfectly cast and there are many surprising roles such as Olimar and later on Ganon. Though there are a few hiccups,  in the beginning I did not like Princess Peach until well, again this would bring spoilers but her performance near the end was superb and downright creepy. Characters such as Kirby are creepy and well played, even if the overall presentation of the costume wasn’t amazing the acting greatly made up for it and pulled you into the world.

Speaking of costumes, the people who designed them deserve a highfive. They did a ton of research and had all the little details in there, and there were a ton of costumes to be made. Though not of the highest grade material, it was quite believable.

The two creators I give a hats off to especially. The dark grittiness of the world they presented was truly mind boggling and every step of the way left more questions. The writing superb and intense with many references to the source materials, a gamers dream really. Even at the end I am left wondering if there will be more, a second season or a movie would be most appreciated. 

Who should see this though? In my opinion anyone who’s in the mood for a good thriller and enjoys video games. It has all the ingredients to make an amazing series and pulls it off quite well. Yes there are some plots holes and they could use some more budget but take it for what it is and it is quite amazing what There Will Be Brawl is.
