The Hero of Time is the Best rendition of Zelda I have seen on film so far. It does have its faults though. The Hero of Time is a fan film rendition of popular N64 game The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time that has made a name for itself on the internet. I first heard of this film 3 years ago while still in highschool and when I was still awkward with the girls. Okay I still am but that’s not the point, the point is that this film is very close to my heart. After 3 years of waiting and the drop of the Zelda title we now have The Hero of Time.
Was it worth the wait? In my opinion, yes every second of it. But this is very much a cult film, so not many people will like it. I am in the audience that will follow this movie around. But I can see its faults quite easily. The story can get somewhat confusing at points since events can feel mixed about, the acting can be terrible at points but quite hilarious, and this is to my dear Link. Please go outside and tan a bit, I was afraid that you were a cousin of the Adams Family since you looked so sickly pale at certain points. Now what they did right they did really right. First and foremost, the original score done by George R. Powell is amazing bringing you right into the story. The opening sequence gave me butterflies when I realized that I was finally watching this film. I also enjoyed the special effects that they used for a film of this budget, they can be very fun and quite hilarious but still get the point across very well. One last thing that I did enjoy was some of the differences in plot and relationships with characters, namely Saria. Although many won’t agree with me I do like what they did with Link and Saria, I won’t give away any spoilers but you’ll see almost immediately in the film.
Now if you don’t know the story of Ocarina of Time you may be a little confused about what all is going on in this universe. The major things you need to know are, Link – good, Zelda – good, Ganon – bad. But if you really want to know the source material just go out and buy The Ocarina of Time for either N64, Game Cube or Wii Virtual Console. I recommend the Game Cube version since it comes with Master Quest which is a harder version of OoT.
Now will you like it? Well if you like cheesy fun cult movies then probably. But if you’re expecting some high budget block buster then you should look elsewhere since you will not find it here. They stick to the source material well while exploring new ideas where some work and some just purely don’t. Give it a chance though since it is free to watch on www.dailymotion.com and soon will be released for free online at www.theherooftime.com.
