Most of us have seen screen adaptations of Charles Dickens’ classic 19th century tale of miser Ebenezer Scrooge’s redemption. So why would we want to go see another one, especially one that is pretty true to the original tale? Two reasons: Jim Carrey and dazzling animation.Jim Carrey plays several characters and each with unique distinction. But don’t go thinking this is a “Jim Carrey” movie. He’s true to the characters of the classic tale. However, if you’re not a Carrey fan, don’t stay away because his typical high jinx is not to be found. Carrey shows his acting chops, something he should do more. That’s not to say he doesn’t make us laugh, he does, but as a very convincing Scrooge.
Perhaps what makes this film most appealing is the storybook feel it has in its animation style. Highly realistic, yet reflecting the romance of the Victorian age, the film’s craftsmanship is dazzling. The 3D version is worth the extra charge. The motion and the detail are practically flawless.
Director Robert Zemeckis skillfully and faithfully retells Dickens tale while giving us amazing visualizations of classic scenes. Aside from a chase sequence in the final ghost visit that seemed to be more of an experiment to bring some levity during a dark part of the story, every image gives one a great appreciation for classic literature and exquisite filmmaking.
